The Sorting Hat can also be used to determine which home a student should reside in. It is able to read the wearer’s thoughts and respond to the wearer’s thoughts, and even talk to the wearer. It also helps determine which House the student is a member of and to award the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy.

It was not only the location where Harry received his first (and final) horcrux but it was also the place the location where Voldemort discovered his diadem. The room also houses a range of oddball artifacts including the Sorting Hat, which is an artifact that is sapient. The hat also contains the legilimen, which utilizes legitmization to read minds.
