The Sorting Hat also performs various other tasks, in addition to the decision of which house a student should be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It can also be used to determine the House a student belongs to and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

The room also houses a variety of oddball artifacts including the Sorting Hat, which is an artifact that is sapient. It also contains a legilimen, which uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than most wizards would have you believe it is actually only performed by a few.
