The Sorting Hat also serves many other functions, besides determining the house to which a student should be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and respond to their thoughts. The area is also home to a variety of odd artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact that is its own. The hat also houses a legilimen, which uses legitmization in order to read minds. While this is a trickier task than most wizards would have you believe it is actually performed by a select few.
