Sorting hat
Each student is assigned the Hogwarts house in their first year. This is dependent on their personality. The Sorting Hat does the heavy lifting, placing students into the best House to test them. It’s a great opportunity for one to test their strengths and weaknesses.

The Sorting Hat is an enchanted and clever object. It was designed by J.K. Rowling, and is a reference to the magician’s hat which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It also serves to determine which students will be placed in Hogwarts Houses by the Founders of Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat also performs a number of functions beyond the decision of which house a student needs to be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It can even talk to them. It also helps determine which House a student belongs to and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy.

Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts The Room of Requirement played a crucial role in the story. It was not only the location where Harry received his first (and final) Horcrux, but it was also the place where Voldemort discovered his diadem. In actuality, the Room of Requirement was so enigmatic that it took the most enigmatic part of a year for Dumbledore to uncover its sinister past.

The room is also home to a variety of odd artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact of its own. The hat also contains the legilimen, a device that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than many wizards would like you to believe it is being performed by a select few.
