The Sorting Hat also serves many other functions, besides the simple task of determining which house a student should be assigned. It is able to read the wearer’s mind and respond to the wearer’s thoughts, and even speak to the wearer. It is also used to determine which House students belong to and to award the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy.
