The Sorting Hat is an imaginative enchanted object. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a reference to the magician’s hat, which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used to determine the students who will be placed in Hogwarts Houses , as decided by the Founders of Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat also serves many other functions, besides determining which house a student needs to be assigned. It is able to read the wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It can even speak to them. It is also used to determine which House students belong to and to award the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts The Room of Requirement played a pivotal role in the series. Aside from providing Harry with his first (and last) horcrux and a horcrux, it also served as the location the location where Voldemort’s lost diadem was kept. In actuality, the Room of Requirement was so enigmatic that it took the best part of a year Dumbledore to unmask its nefarious past.

The room also houses a variety of odd artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, which is a sapient artifact. The hat also houses the legilimen, which utilizes legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than the majority of wizards would have you believe it is being performed by a select few.
