The Sorting Hat can be used to determine the house a student should live in. It is able to read the wearer’s thoughts, respond to the wearer’s thoughts, and even talk to the wearer. It also helps determine which House the student is a member of, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

The area is also home to an array of oddball artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact of its own. It also has a legilimen that uses legitmization to read minds. This is a challenging task but it has been successfully completed by a handful of.
