Every student is assigned an Hogwarts house during their first year. This is based on their personality traits. The Sorting Hat does the heavy lifting and places students in the right House to test their character. It’s a great way for students to test their strengths and weaknesses.
The Sorting Hat is a clever enchanted object. It was invented by J.K. Rowling and pays tribute to the magician’s hat which belonged to Godric Gryffindor. It is also used to determine which students will be placed in the Hogwarts Houses , as decided by the Founders of Hogwarts.
The Sorting Hat also performs various other tasks, in addition to determining the house to which a student should be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and respond to their thoughts. It can even speak to them. It can be used to determine the House in which a student is from and to present the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who are qualified.
Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement played a important role in the Harry Potter series. It was not just the place where Harry received his first (and final) Horcrux, but it was also the place where Voldemort discovered his diadem. In actual fact, the Room of Requirement was so mysterious that it took the most enigmatic part of the year for Dumbledore to reveal its dark past.
The room also houses a variety of odd artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact of its own. It also contains the legilimen, a device that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than many wizards would have you believe, it has been only performed by a few.
