The Sorting Hat also serves a number of functions beyond determining the house to which a student should be assigned. It is able to read the wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It can even speak to them. It can also be used to determine the House where a student is from and to present the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who are qualified.

The Room of Requirement was a key element of Harry’s Hogwarts experience. Aside from providing Harry with his first (and last) horocracy It was also the place the location where Voldemort’s lost diadem was hidden. The room also houses a variety of odd artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, which is an artifact that is sapient. The hat also contains the legilimen, which utilizes legitmization in order to read minds. While this is a harder task than many wizards would have you believe it is being performed by a select few.
