The Sorting Hat is an imaginative enchanted object. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a reference to the magician’s hat, which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by Hogwarts’ Founders of Hogwarts to decide the students to put in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat also serves many other functions, besides the decision of the house to which a student should be assigned. It is able to read a wearer’s mind and respond to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It can be used to determine the House where a student is from and to present the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who have the qualifications.

Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement played a important role in the Harry Potter series. It was not just where Harry got his first (and final) horcrux but it was also the location where Voldemort discovered his diadem that he had lost. The Room of Requirement was so obscure that it took Dumbledore nearly a year to unravel its dark history.

The room also houses a variety of odd-looking artifacts like the Sorting Hat, which is a sapient artifact. The hat also houses a legilimen, which uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than many wizards would have you believe it is being performed by a select few.
