The Sorting Hat also performs a number of functions beyond the decision of which house a student should be assigned. It can read the wearer’s thoughts and respond to their thoughts. It can even talk to them. It also helps determine the House the student is a member of, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

Required Room
The Room of Requirement was a crucial part of Harry’s Hogwarts experience. It was not just the place where Harry obtained his first (and final) horcrux but also the place where Voldemort discovered his diadem that he had lost. The Room of Requirement was so obscure that it took Dumbledore nearly a whole year to unravel its dark history.

The room also houses an array of oddball artifacts, such as the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact that is its own. It also contains a legilimen, which uses legitmization in order to read minds. Although this is a more difficult task than most wizards would have you believe, it has been only performed by a few.
