The Sorting Hat is a clever enchanted object. It was designed by J.K. Rowling, and is a reference to the magician’s hat which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used to determine the students who will be placed in Hogwarts Houses by the Founders of Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat also serves many other functions, besides the decision of the house to which a student should be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and respond to wearer’s thoughts, and even speak to the wearer. It also helps determine which House students belong to and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

Required Room

Aside from it providing Harry with his first (and final) Horcrux It was also the place where Voldemort’s lost diadem was hidden. In actuality, the Room of Requirement was so enigmatic that it took the best part of a year Dumbledore to unmask its nefarious past.

The area is also home to a variety of odd artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact in its own right. It also has a legilimen that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than many wizards would have you believe, it has been performed by a select few.
