The Sorting Hat is imaginative and magical. It was designed by J.K. Rowling, and is a nod to the magician’s hat, which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by Hogwarts’ Founders of Hogwarts to decide which students to place in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat also performs many other functions, besides the simple task of determining the house to which a student should be assigned. It is able to read a wearer’s thoughts and respond to their thoughts. It can even talk to them. It can also be used to determine which House a student belongs to, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy.

Required Room
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts The Room of Requirement played a pivotal role in the series. Aside from the fact that it provided Harry with his first (and last) horocracy and a horcrux, it also served as the location the place where Voldemort’s diadem, which was lost, was kept. In fact, the Room of Requirement was so enigmatic that it took the best part of a year for Dumbledore to uncover its sinister past.

The area is also home to various odd-looking artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact in its own right. The hat also boasts a legilimen that uses legitmization to read minds. This is a difficult task however it has been accomplished by a handful.
