In the first year of Hogwarts the students are assigned a house that is based on their personality traits. The Sorting Hat does the heavy lifting, placing students in the best House to challenge them. It’s a great opportunity to test one’s strengths and weaknesses.

The Sorting Hat is a clever enchanted object. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a nod to the magician’s hat which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by the Founders of Hogwarts to decide the students to put in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat also performs a number of functions beyond determining the house to which a student should be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and respond to their thoughts. It can even speak to them. It also helps determine which House students belong to, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

Required Room
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts The Room of Requirement played a pivotal role in the series. It was not just the place where Harry obtained his first (and final) horcrux but it was also the place the location where Voldemort found his lost diadem. In actual fact, the Room of Requirement was so enigmatic that it took the best part of a year Dumbledore to reveal its dark past.

The room also houses a variety of odd artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, which is a sapient artifact. The hat also contains a legilimen, which uses legitmization to read minds. Although this is a more difficult task than most wizards would like you to believe, it has been only performed by a few.
