The Sorting Hat is an imaginative enchanted object. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a reference to the magician’s hat which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by the Founders of Hogwarts to decide which students they will place in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat can be used to determine the home a student should reside in. It is able to read the wearer’s thoughts and respond to wearer’s thoughts, and even talk to the wearer. It can also be used to determine the House students belong to and to award the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy.

Room of Requirement
The Room of Requirement was a crucial element of Harry’s Hogwarts experience. Aside from the fact that it provided Harry with his first (and last) horcrux It was also the place the place where Voldemort’s diadem, which was lost, was kept. The area is also home to an array of oddball artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact of its own. The hat also houses the legilimen, which utilizes legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than many wizards would have you believe, it has been performed by a select few.
