The Sorting Hat is creative and magical. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a nod to the magician’s hat which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by the Founders of Hogwarts to decide which students to place in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat also performs a number of functions beyond determining which house a student needs to be assigned. It is able to read the wearer’s mind and respond to the wearer’s thoughts, and even speak to the wearer. It can also be used to determine which House a student belongs to, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.
