The Sorting Hat also serves many other functions, besides the simple task of determining the house to which a student should be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and respond to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It can also be used to determine the House in which a student is from and to give the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who are qualified.

The room also houses a range of odd-looking artifacts like the Sorting Hat, which is an ancient artifact. It also contains the legilimen, which utilizes legitmization in order to read minds. While this is a harder task than most wizards would like you to believe it is actually performed by a select few.
