The Sorting Hat also performs various other tasks, in addition to determining which house a student needs to be assigned. It is able to read a wearer’s thoughts and respond to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It can also be used to determine the House which a student comes from and to give the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who are qualified.

Required Room
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement played a pivotal role in the series. The room also houses various odd-looking artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact of its own. The hat also houses the legilimen, a device that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than most wizards would have you believe it is being performed by a select few.
