The Sorting Hat is clever and magical. It was created by J.K. Rowling and pays tribute to the magician’s hat which belonged to Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by the Founders of Hogwarts to decide the students to put in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat also serves many other functions, besides the simple task of determining the house to which a student should be assigned. It is able to listen to the wearer’s thoughts and respond to wearer’s thoughts, and even speak to the wearer. It also helps determine the House a student belongs to and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

The area is also home to various odd-looking artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact that is its own. The hat also houses the legilimen, which utilizes legitmization in order to read minds. This isn’t an easy task, but it has been successfully completed by a few.
