The Sorting Hat also serves various other tasks, in addition to the decision of the house to which a student should be assigned. It is able to read a wearer’s mind and respond to their thoughts. It can even speak to them. It also helps determine the House the student is a member of and to award the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.
