The Sorting Hat is an enchanted and clever object. It was created by J.K. Rowling and pays tribute to the magician’s hat which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by Hogwarts’ Founders of Hogwarts to decide which students they will place in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat also performs a number of functions beyond the decision of the house to which a student should be assigned. It is able to read a wearer’s mind and respond to their thoughts. It can even speak to them. It can be used to determine the House which a student comes from and to give the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who are qualified.

Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts The Room of Requirement played a pivotal role in the series. It was not just the place the location where Harry obtained his first (and final) Horcrux, but it was also the place the place where Voldemort found his lost diadem. In fact the Room of Requirement was so enigmatic that it took the best part of a year for Dumbledore to unmask its nefarious past.

The room also houses an array of oddball artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact in its own right. The hat also boasts a legilimen that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a harder task than the majority of wizards would have you believe it is actually only performed by a few.

Some of these short-cuts are only available to members of the House. The secret entrance for Hufflepuff is hidden behind barrels. It’s also under spell and if you tap the barrel in a rhythm it will open an edgy chute.

The Dark Room is where Dumbledore’s Army meets. It is where a lot of the battles are fought during the Harry Potter series. It is also where Dumbledore makes his case for Harry’s defense. It also has floor cushions for defensive spells as well as volumes of Defence Against the Dark Arts.

There are also secret entrances to four House dormitories. These secret entrances are kept from view from the outside world and require an account number and password. These are the entrances used by the members of that House.
