The Sorting Hat is an imaginative enchanted object. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a nod to the magician’s hat, which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by Hogwarts’ Founders of Hogwarts to decide which students to place in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat can be used to determine what house a student is best placed in. It is able to read a wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It can also be used to determine which House the student is a member of, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

Required Room
The Room of Requirement was a key part of Harry’s Hogwarts experience. It was not only the location where Harry got his first (and final) horcrux but it was also where Voldemort discovered his diadem that he had lost. In actuality the Room of Requirement was so mysterious that it took the best part of a year for Dumbledore to unmask its nefarious past.

The room is also home to an array of oddball artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact of its own. The hat also boasts an legilimen that utilizes legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than many wizards would like you to believe it is being performed by a select few.
