The Sorting Hat is an enchanted and clever object. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a reference to the magician’s hat, which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It also serves to determine the students who will be placed in Hogwarts Houses by the Founders of Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat can be used to determine the house a student should live in. It is able to read a wearer’s thoughts and respond to their thoughts. It can even speak to them. It also helps determine which House the student is a member of and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

Required Room
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts The Room of Requirement played a pivotal role in the series. It was not just the place where Harry got his first (and final) Horcrux, but also the place where Voldemort discovered his diadem. In actuality the Room of Requirement was so enigmatic that it took the most enigmatic part of the year for Dumbledore to uncover its sinister past.

The room also houses a variety of oddball artifacts including the Sorting Hat, which is an artifact that is sapient. The hat also features an legilimen that utilizes legitmization to read minds. Although this is a more difficult task than the majority of wizards would like you to believe it is being only performed by a few.
