The Sorting Hat is a clever enchanted object. It was designed by J.K. Rowling, and is a nod to the magician’s hat, which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It also serves to determine which students will be placed in the Hogwarts Hostel by the Founders of Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat can also be used to determine which home a student should reside in. It is able to read the wearer’s thoughts and respond to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It is also used to determine the House students belong to, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy.
