The Sorting Hat can be used to determine which home a student should reside in. It can read the wearer’s mind, respond to the wearer’s thoughts, and even talk to the wearer. It is also used to determine the House the student is a member of, and to present the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy.

Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement played a pivotal role in the series. It was not just the place the place where Harry obtained his first (and final) horcrux but it was also the place the place where Voldemort discovered his diadem that he had lost. The Room of Requirement was so mysterious that it took Dumbledore almost a year to uncover its dark past.

The room also contains a number of oddball artifacts including the Sorting Hat, which is an ancient artifact. The hat also contains a legilimen, which uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a harder task than most wizards would like you to believe it is being only performed by a few.
