The Sorting Hat also performs many other functions, besides the simple task of determining which house a student should be assigned. It is able to read a wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It can even talk to them. It can also be used to determine the House in which a student is from and to present the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who have the qualifications.

Required Room
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement played a crucial role in the story. Aside from the fact that it provided Harry with his first (and final) Horcrux, it was also the location where Voldemort’s lost diadem was hidden. The Room of Requirement was so obscure that it took Dumbledore nearly a year to uncover its dark past.

The room also houses a variety of odd artifacts, including the Sorting Hat, which is an ancient artifact. The hat also contains the legilimen, a device that uses legitmization in order to read minds. While this is a harder task than many wizards would like you to believe, it has been performed by a select few.
