In actuality, the Room of Requirement was so mysterious that it took the best part of the year for Dumbledore to reveal its dark past.

The room is also home to an array of oddball artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact in its own right. The hat also houses the legilimen, which utilizes legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than the majority of wizards would have you believe, it has been performed by a select few.
