The Sorting Hat is creative and magical. It was invented by J.K. Rowling and pays tribute to the magician’s hat which was the property of Godric Gryffindor. It is also used by Hogwarts’ Founders of Hogwarts to decide which students they will place in their Houses.

The Sorting Hat also serves various other tasks, in addition to the decision of which house a student needs to be assigned. It can read the wearer’s thoughts and respond to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It also helps determine which House the student is a member of and to award the Sword of Gryffindor to those who are worthy of it.

Required Room
The Room of Requirement was a crucial element of Harry’s Hogwarts experience. Apart from providing Harry with his first (and last) horcrux It was also the place where Voldemort’s lost diadem was hidden. In actual fact, the Room of Requirement was so mysterious that it took the best part of a year Dumbledore to reveal its dark past.

The room also houses a variety of oddball artifacts including the Sorting Hat, which is an artifact that is sapient. The hat also houses the legilimen, a device that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than most wizards would like you to believe it is being performed by a select few.
