The Sorting Hat is clever and magical. It was created by J.K. Rowling and pays tribute to the magician’s hat which belonged to Godric Gryffindor. It is also used to determine which students will be placed in the Hogwarts Houses by the Founders of Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat also performs many other functions, besides determining which house a student should be assigned. It is able to read a wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It can also be used to determine the House which a student comes from and to present the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who are qualified.

Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts The Room of Requirement played a important role in the Harry Potter series. It was not just the place where Harry received his first (and final) Horcrux, but it was also the place where Voldemort discovered his diadem. In actuality the Room of Requirement was so mysterious that it took the best part of a year Dumbledore to reveal its dark past.

The room also houses a variety of oddball artifacts including the Sorting Hat, which is an artifact that is sapient. The hat also houses the legilimen, a device that uses legitmization to read minds. This is a difficult task, but it has been accomplished by a handful.

There are several shortcuts that can be used to get from the school to the castle. These aren’t always easy however. They are usually concealed by tapestry or with the use of a secret entrance. These shortcuts can only be accessed by House members. Behind barrels is the secret entrance to Hufflepuff. The barrels are also under spell so when you tap the barrel in a the right rhythm it will open an edgy chute.

The Dark Room is the place where Dumbledore’s army meets. It is where a lot of the battles are fought in the Harry Potter series. It is also where Dumbledore argues in Harry’s defense. It has floor cushions for defensive spells, as well as volumes of Defence Against the Dark Arts.

There are also secret access points to four House dormitories. These are also hidden from the outside, and require a password or a ritual. These entrances are used by members of that House.
