The Sorting Hat is clever and magical. It was created by J.K. Rowling, and is a reference to the magician’s hat which was owned by Godric Gryffindor. It also serves to determine which students will be placed in Hogwarts Houses by the Founders of Hogwarts.
The Sorting Hat also serves various other tasks, in addition to the simple task of determining which house a student should be assigned. It is able to read the wearer’s mind and react to their thoughts. It is even able to speak to them. It can also be used to determine the House which a student comes from and to present the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who have the qualifications.
Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement played a important role in the Harry Potter series. Aside from the fact that it provided Harry with his first (and last) horcrux, it was also the place where Voldemort’s diadem, which was lost, was hidden. The Room of Requirement was so mysterious that it took Dumbledore nearly a year to discover its dark past.
The area is also home to a variety of odd artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact that is its own. The hat also boasts a legilimen that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a trickier task than most wizards would have you believe it is actually performed by a select few.
