The Sorting Hat is creative and magical. It was created by J.K. Rowling and pays tribute to the magician’s hat which belonged to Godric Gryffindor. It also serves to determine which students will be placed in the Hogwarts Houses , as decided by the Founders of Hogwarts.
The Sorting Hat also serves a number of functions beyond determining which house a student needs to be assigned. It can read the wearer’s mind and respond to the wearer’s thoughts, and even talk to the wearer. It can be used to determine the House which a student comes from and also to present the Sword of Gryffindor only to those who have the qualifications.
Room of Requirement
During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement played a important role in the Harry Potter series. Apart from it providing Harry with his first (and final) Horcrux and a horcrux, it also served as the location the place where Voldemort’s diadem, which was lost, was kept. The Room of Requirement was so obscure that it took Dumbledore nearly a whole year to unravel its dark history.
The area is also home to an array of oddball artifacts like the Sorting Hat, a sapient artifact that is its own. The hat also contains the legilimen, a device that uses legitmization to read minds. While this is a harder task than most wizards would have you believe it is actually only performed by a few.
